Leeds: Tom Duffield's book launch - The Whole House Is Shaking.

7 people on my course and I decided that we wanted to go to Tom's book launch to show our support to him and to have a look at Village as I had never been there before.

Even from the outside, the book store looked really interesting as they had displays in the window of various books and also had Tom's book on its own little stand to the right of the window as you looked at the storefront. Walking in, it was really fascinating to see so many magazines and books all in one place - the magazine 'Elephant' who Charlotte Jansen (a guest speaker at the university previously mentioned on my blog) is a part of was there; as were a lot of magazines that I had never heard of which really interested me so I spent a lot of time just browsing through the different publications that were on sale.

Tom's book:

Even though I had heard about the book many times and had seen the images that are included within it around university and on Tom's Instagram's page, it was great to see the book in physical form. The book focuses on the hidden addiction to heroin that Tom's father went through and how this was something that both him and his sister did not know about. An interesting addition to the book was inserts of his sister's writing from when she was younger - this broke the work up slightly and made it even more interesting as the way he had placed it on the pages covered up some parts of the images of the book. This added to the hidden aspect of the project, and I found out that the book is based off one of the things his sister had written - 'The Whole House Is Shaking'.

The images exhibited on the walls:

These are two images that he had placed on separate walls, and being able to see the work really large was interesting as you could see each detail that he had captured.

This was the other wall that he had placed images on, and I think that the way he has displayed these images relates to the book really well as they all seem to be unorganised - this demonstrates how the revelation of his father's addiction may have shook up his world and made him unable to think in an organised manner. Here are the prints closer up:

As well as the book, Tom also had some prints from the book on sale for £2:

Finally, there was a piece of text on one of the walls with his images that explained the project really simply into one paragraph for anyone who would view the work and not have seen it before:
