Shoot 2 (test shoot).

Image
Taking inspiration from a previous blog post on the photographer Brandon Woelfel, I did an experiment using fairy lights within the subject of self portraiture. I did this just to get a feel of how I would shoot with someone else using fairy lights and thought it would be a good idea to test the idea before going out and shooting with someone else. Images from this test shoot: As this was self portraiture, I had to try and focus the image by holding out my hand at where I was going to sit, set the camera on a timer and then dangle the fairy lights in front of me to achieve the effect I wanted for the image. As I couldn't see what I was taking a picture of, the lights ended up being in front of my face and my face can't be seen very well which makes the images not very effective in what I was trying to achieve. Although this shoot didn't achieve images that worked, I think the experimentation has worked well in looking at how I want to do my next shoot.

Shoot 1.

After looking into competitions that I could enter, I found one that really inspired me to go on a shoot. The competition was to take photographs of people wearing sunglasses and I thought that this was something that I wanted to do - for the competition and to take some interesting images. These are all of the images that I took that work for this subject, as some of them ended up too dark or too bright due to the wrong settings being used: Here are a few of my favourite images from the shoot: I chose these as my favourite images because I think they all work aesthetically and, due to the weather being really warm and sunny, the lighting worked really well in my favour. I really love how the sunglasses reflect the surroundings in each image, and I tried to frame it so that the reflection looked interesting. I especially love the images in which the model has been partially covered with leaves as this creates an interesting frame. I also really lov

Photography competitions.

As a photographer, there are competitions that I could enter to either help get my work noticed or even win some money to help buy things to progress my work and become better at photography in some way or another. I have done some research and looked into different competitions that I could enter that would be of interest to me (the prize may or may not be something I would want/need but these are just examples). I am going to look into things such as cost of the competitions, how I would go about entering the competitions as some may have specific guidelines and procedures, and of course what the prize would be if I were to win that competition. As I am a photographer who is mostly interested in photographing people, I think this is one thing I will be most likely to look at within competitions. Competition one: One website that I found that is especially good for photo competitions is Viewbug. It had lots of different types of competitions for all different types of photograph

Artists that create interesting portraits: Medina Dugger

Image
The project by Dugger I am going to be looking at is entitled 'Chroma: An Ode To J.D.', which focuses on and celebrates Nigerian women's hair styles. The images are inspired by Nigerian photographer J.D. Ojeikere, and are also inspired by hair colour trends in Lagos. Here are some of the images from this ongoing project: One thing that really caught my eye with these images was how colourful the images were, from the background, to the frame, to the styling of the model within the photograph. This created interest for me and made me want to learn more about the project itself, which then led me to love the images even more after finding out what they represent.

Artists that create interesting portraits: Brandon Woelfel

Brandon is a photographer I found on Instagram - and I instantly fell in love with his work. It is all so beautiful within its composition and colours and is aesthetically pleasing when placed all together. Within a lot of his portraits, he uses lights as a focus point to create leading lines towards to the subject of the image. I love how the lights reach all the way to the camera and are made to be blurred due to the depth of field as it focuses the eye on the model. I also think the reflection within the glasses adds the final touch to the photo because it adds some more light into it. The first image is very different to the other 2 due to the surrounds and object use. In this one, the model is placed in a forest and paint is being used - there is no fairy lights within the photo. This photo looks very chaotic and this juxtaposes with the surroundings as a forest is a place I would associate with calmness and silence.

Artists that create interesting portraits: Francesco Vezzola

The following project simply shows women bathing in coloured water, hence the name of the project being 'Colourtubs'. I think this title is really fitting to this project as the images are really minimalist. This project looks into 'the spontaneity of everyday life' (as Angelina Puschkarski states on Another Magazine's website), as he was shooting with a model in a bathtub and, for no reason, added pink colouring to it - this experiment would then create this project. (Katharina - Spinach) (Sarah - Beetroots) (Katja - Turmeric) This project really captivated me because of the beautiful simplicity of each image within it. I really love how they are taken on film - I think this gives them an interesting finish which might have been lost in digital photography. The use of close ups on the subjects within the images really exposes them - they would be exposed in a different way if they were full length body shots. I think this adds a raw quality to th

Irving Penn.

Image
Since starting to study photography at A Level at college, I have always been interested in portraiture and the ways in which photographers in the modern day are still influenced by iconic photographers of the past - myself included. The photographer I am going to be looking at is Irving Penn due to him being a very well known photographer and one that I find to be very interesting. There is a lot of work available to view online of his ranging from still life to portraits, but I am obviously going to be looking into his portraiture work and analysing his personal style from different shoots he has done and with a variety of people. In these images, there are clear similarities between them instantly - they are all in black and white and all include the subject's hand(s). The use of black and white is most likely due to the time the images were taken and he won't have had much of a choice in the matter as this was the only option available to him at the time of his caree

Conventions of portraiture.

Image
When taking a portrait of someone, there are always things to consider to ensure that a successful image is achieved. This is broken down into 4 sub sections as outlined by David Bate: Face, pose, location and clothing. I am going to briefly explain what each of these points mean and give examples of photographers to demonstrate the points further. FACE The first convention I am going to look into is face, and why this is essential when taking a portrait of any kind. It is obvious that when taking a portrait of someone, their face usually needs to be seen because this lets the audience know who the photograph is of. It also allows the audience more insight into the meaning of the photograph if there is a meaning to be seen because the subject's expression can be captured which wouldn't be achieved if the face was out of view or obstructed in some way. "The expression on a face in portraiture is crucial and can exert a considerable impact on how a portrait signifie

What am I going to focus on for final year?

Through studying photography at A Level at college and then going on to study it further at university, I have found that something I really enjoy photographing is people. I think for my final year, this is what I am going to focus on - although I'm not sure on what type of photography I want to do specifically. This is something I am going to research into and look at artists I like so that I can get more of an understanding of how I want to approach this.
