Sixth shoot back at university.

Image
I decided to do the self-portraiture shoot again, but this time asked for some help from one of my friends as I knew that this was something that I needed to do from the previous attempt. In this shoot, I took a portrait of the person who was helping me to give an idea of what I wanted him to take pictures like so that he knew what I wanted. I then posed for him and directed him with what I didn't like about the images he had taken so that I got images that I wanted. Contact sheet from this shoot: My images: This was a lot more successful than the previous shoot as I didn't have to do everything involved myself - having someone help assist me in the studio took a lot of the stress off of me and therefore it was so much more relaxed than previously trying to do it alone. I tried getting very similar framing to the images that I had taken in previous shots as these had worked really well for this project. In preparation for this shoot, I made sure that I wor

Manchester: And Then There Was.

Some people on my course and I decided to go to an exhibition in Manchester and, although it took us a while to find it and figure out which building we were supposed to go into, it ended up being a lot better than I expected. The images that I saw were not particularly relevant to my FMP, but it was interesting to see nonetheless. Here is an overview of the exhibition that we saw: I am much more of a portrait-based photographer and, as can be seen in the image above, the images that we saw were from documentary photographers. Although this is not an area of photography that I create much myself, I find it very interesting and really enjoyed seeing the exhibit. Luke Saxon: Chan-Yang Kim: Mat Unsworth: As well as prints on the wall, there was also a zine comprised of images that could be purchased. The zine included a variety of different images from each photographer that could be moved around and placed in any order, or could be pull

Fifth shoot back at university.

After having my work reviewed by lots of different people who all work in different ways, I decided to do a shoot looking at self portraiture. As I stated in my blog post about the feedback I received, I told them that self-portraiture is something I was considering doing and they all agreed that it was a good idea to test it out and see if it worked. Contact sheet from this shoot: I found this shoot extremely difficult to do because I was trying to take the images alone with no assistance - I was trying to hold the mirror, focus the camera, pose and take the picture all at the same time. My images: A lot of the images that I achieved were either blurry or had me looking at the camera which was very obvious - I really struggled in this shoot and it really put me in a down mood as it was really unsuccessful and I felt like I had wasted my time. Although I feel really disheartened, I want to reshoot this but this time with help from someone to help take the pictures for

Princes Quay galleries.

Image
Yesterday, I went to my local shopping centre in Hull in which there were a few small galleries that were really close together. Some of the images that were included within the galleries were not something that particularly interested me, but I went in to have a look anyway because I thought that it would be interesting to look at them and they could help me with my project in some way. Gallery 1, "IN & AT": In this small gallery, there was a lot of images that I thought looked really interesting within their subject matter and the way that they were photographed. They are taken by a lot of different artists, who are from different places in the world as this exhibition is the "International Group Exhibition". The photograph that interested me the most is the one in which there is a man who is partially covered by a shadow on his face. This image was taken by Oihana Marco, and includes a man who had to run away from his family to escape

Leeds: Tom Duffield's book launch - The Whole House Is Shaking.

Image
7 people on my course and I decided that we wanted to go to Tom's book launch to show our support to him and to have a look at Village as I had never been there before. Even from the outside, the book store looked really interesting as they had displays in the window of various books and also had Tom's book on its own little stand to the right of the window as you looked at the storefront. Walking in, it was really fascinating to see so many magazines and books all in one place - the magazine 'Elephant' who Charlotte Jansen (a guest speaker at the university previously mentioned on my blog) is a part of was there; as were a lot of magazines that I had never heard of which really interested me so I spent a lot of time just browsing through the different publications that were on sale. Tom's book: Even though I had heard about the book many times and had seen the images that are included within it around university and on Tom's Instagr

Colour Theory

Image
Within my images, I am often using bright colours to try and create interesting visuals to engage the viewer in the work. Initially, I have used any colours that I think work well together and have not thought too much about why I am using them, but am considering looking into the use of colour more to help develop my work and give it more meaning. For example, if the colour red instantly signifies danger in any situation, this is a colour I would perhaps stay away from as this isn't the type of imagery I want to be creating. Here are some things for me to consider:

Portfolio reviews.

Image
To finish off the Creative Exchange Week, we had the opportunity to have portfolio reviews from 7 individuals. I decided to have reviews with 4 out of the 7 that I felt were relevant to my practice and would have knowledge within the area I want to go into in the future. I decided to choose Sophie Abbott, Tom Duffield, Nicole Jopek and Laura Patrick. I wanted to see as many people as I could as I thought this would be beneficial to me in developing my work and receiving as many different viewpoints as possible. I took in 2 images from my Final Major Project - 2 images which were very similar in look and subject matter but were focused in different ways and used different colours, and some fashion images that I also wanted some feedback on. These are the images I took in with me to show: Laura Patrick: For her final major project Laura photographed paper sculptures she had made and lit them so beautifully, but this is something that pushed her out of her comfort zone.
