Photography competitions.

As a photographer, there are competitions that I could enter to either help get my work noticed or even win some money to help buy things to progress my work and become better at photography in some way or another.

I have done some research and looked into different competitions that I could enter that would be of interest to me (the prize may or may not be something I would want/need but these are just examples). I am going to look into things such as cost of the competitions, how I would go about entering the competitions as some may have specific guidelines and procedures, and of course what the prize would be if I were to win that competition. As I am a photographer who is mostly interested in photographing people, I think this is one thing I will be most likely to look at within competitions.

Competition one:

One website that I found that is especially good for photo competitions is Viewbug. It had lots of different types of competitions for all different types of photographers which I really liked.

For this competition, the prize is:

Bestlight Photo Studio Ultra High Power LED Light
Yearly PRO Membership
Exclusive Blog Feature
400 Reward Points

This competition is a Pro membership competition, but I would be allowed to enter it using one photo as I have 1 free Premium entry I am allowed to upload. It is very simple to enter, you simply click on 'Submit photos' and choose the photograph you would like to enter into the competition. The requirements for this competition simply state 'Show people wearing sunglasses' which is very broad and would allow people to upload a variety of photography. This caught my eye because I love photographing people and the way the website advertised the competition really drew me in because of how bright and fun it looked.

The specific requirements are here:

Here are some entries that I really liked:

I really love the image of the girl on the blue background because it is very minimal but is also really well lit and the pose is really interesting. I think the subtle colours work really well to add to the image but not distract from the sunglasses which are the focus of the image due to the competition. I also love the image next to it because it is very different - it is a close up of a man's face and is edited into black and white which looks interesting as it shows every detail on his face and the stare into the camera really addresses the audience and brings them into the image.

Competition 2:

Due to me being interested in portraiture photography, or just simply having an interest in photographing people, this is a competition that I felt really suited my photography style and would be something that I could potentially enter.

The prize for this competition is:
HP Sprocket Portable Photo Printer
300 Reward Points
Blog Feature

As can be seen in the above image, this competition would require me to upgrade my membership to the website to be able to enter. This would then cost me to have a subscription to the website which is something I don't want because I am not planning on entering lots of competitions to make it worth signing up. The submission process is the same as the first competition I mentioned due to it being on the same website, the only difference is that you need to upgrade your membership and then you can submit photos.

Image from this competition that I liked:

I found this image on the entries page and I really love the composition of it because of how the material surrounds her face and frames it. I think the bright green eyes is something that works really well for this image as it grabs the audiences attention, and then with her staring into the camera it draws the audience in even more as she is looking at them.

Competition 3:

Even though this competition isn't specifically for portraiture, I thought that it would be something that I could possibly enter with a portrait that I have taken that includes this topic.

The prize is:
$200 Amazon gift card
ViewBug blog feature
350 Reward Points

This competition is free, so this means that obviously if I had a picture to submit, there would be no reason to not upload it as I would have nothing to lose. To enter this competition, you simply click the 'submit photos' button and then choose the photo you want to upload. The only requirements for this competition is 'show the use of diagonals in your composition', so this makes it a very broad competition to enter.

I really like this photo because of the low angle that has been used and how the long exposure has achieved the blurred train going by, which I think adds interest to the image rather than it being a stationary train.
