Danny Treacy review.

After the talk from Danny, we were able to show our work that we had done for our Final Major Project in small groups. I told him what I had been doing and showed him an arrangement of images that I had taken to show him my experiments so that he could see a variety of my work from this project. He gave me a lot of great feedback and other people within the group also gave some input, and I wrote these down as notes:

Lee Friedlander.
The mixture of colours within the images work.
Spaces feel different.
Want to see yourself.
More going on in mirror images - more life in them.
Distortion is in the way - double barrier.
Satisfaction with mirror images.
Portrait is a study - fragmented portrait.
Use different shape mirror? Long mirror, broken mirror, the model's own mirror.
Mirrors are metaphors.
Open to change.
Context of person - why using them?
Composition works - still life, e-commerce, catalogue, classic.
Like a pizza - certain ingredients needed.
Combine all things that work into one image.
"Flagging".
Subtlety of tones.
Pick out successful parts/elements.

The main thing I took away from this chat with Danny was to keep experimenting, but only with things that work well. I have to use my time wisely and create images that work well for this project - think of a title for this project as this might help evolve and shape the work.

Final pin up session (with feedback).

Today we had our last pin up session to get feedback from the people in our class - this has been really helpful in the past to allow me to see how I could improve my work for the exhibition. I decided on placing quite a few images on the wall because I think my project is a lot more effective when multiple images are placed together. Here is what I placed on the wall: It wasn't the best place to put work up on the walls as there was a lot of marks from where people had drawn on the board, so was a slight distraction I thought. I decided to place 3 different paper types on the wall to see if people thought they worked well together: acetate, semi gloss and metallic. I also placed some images on top of others to reflect the meaning of the project and to give it more depth. BIPP talk and competition.

Today we had the opportunity to listen to BIPP member Bryn Griffiths talk to us about his practice and to show us some images that he has taken over the years - he has 35 years experience in this field and therefore I knew it would be interesting to see how he has got to where he is now. He has won awards for his photography, which I will go further into later on in this post. He started off by showing us an image of a car and asked how many images had made that image possible. A lot of people made guesses, ranging from 2 to around 15 - the answer was, in fact, 74 and I was really shocked at how one image of a car could be made up of so many images. He stated that at age 15, he was either considering doing accountancy or photography and did some work experience at somewhere called Big Shots. Shoot 3.

Taking inspiration from one of the artists that I looked at - Brandon Woelfel - I decided to do a photoshoot similar to the one that I did previously using self portraiture but this time using another person, to really try and experiment more with the fairy lights and also do the shoot with another person which I think worked better than my test shoot simply because I was behind the camera and not trying to do both. All original images: When editing the images, I realised that a lot of them didn't work at all as they were either blurry, not exposed correctly or just didn't work for some other reason. Images that don't work: In these images, I was testing the lighting and how I could hold the lights to take the pictures I wanted. Because I was trying to take pictures at the same time as holding lights, the images ended up not coming out very well and ended up blurring a lot.
