Feedback.
For today's lesson, we had to print out a picture (preferably A3, with exceptions if the images work as part of a series) from our project and then stick it on the walls in the room so that everybody could see it. We were then split into small groups and each group had to analyse some people's work, using the following 5 questions:
1. What are the influences on this work? Suggest at least 2 artists that are relevant, the more info you can provide here the better.
2. How is the work being moved forward? What has changed since the previous time you saw this persons' work? Quick suggestions are helpful.
3. Where would you expect to see this work shown? E.g. - publication, gallery, portfolio? Give some indication why you have made the decision you have.
4. Who (practitioner, agency, freelancer) should the photographer show this work to?
5. Open question - any information that you think this person needs to know about their work.
I placed the following picture up, as I felt it was one of my more successful images from my most recent shoot:
The feedback I got was as follows:
1. Lee Friedlander, Mona Kuhn.
2. Using other models, experimenting with colour, other details obscuring - hiding insecurities.
3. Magazine editorial.
4. Fine art practitioners.
5. Test printing bigger sizes for final prints, is there a theme or meaning behind the images/people?
I feel like the feedback that I received was very fair and helpful - I am going to test out some paper types and sizes as this is something that I am going to have to decide on quite soon as the exhibition draws close. I feel like the meaning of the images is not coming through as easily as I had first hoped, but this might actually be a positive thing for my project as it is about hiding things. I am going to do some research on the artists that have been mentioned - I have definitely heard the names but need to see some pictures to refresh my memory.
