Portfolio Reviews.

Today we had the opportunity to have our work looked at by some reviewers, and I was excited to see what they had to say about my Final Major Project. I chose to talk with Silvana Trevale and Laura Patrick because I felt that these 2 were the most relevant to the work that I make.

Initially I showed Silvana the work that I had created for my Final Major Project, as she had not seen the graduation of the work and so therefore could give an outsider's perspective. I also showed her the layout that I had done for my most recent Interim exhibition so she could understand the project in more depth.

FMP:

Ambiguous.
Silvana said that she liked the layout that I created for my Interim Exhibition.
Hand is always there - in the majority of the images I showed, a hand was present; deliberate?
People show what they want to show.
Image from very first shoot is aesthetically pleasing - orange and blue are complimentary.
Experiment with body parts?
Look at Layla Sailor's work with mirrors.
Is the watch too distracting in one of the images? Could crop this out/reshoot this image.
Use simple circle mirror.
Mirror on floor?

Fashion:

I also decided to show Silvana some of my fashion/portraiture work because I know that this is something she shoots very regularly and therefore thought it would be interesting to see her opinions on my work.

Lit well - she said that it looks like I know how to light people. This has given me a really big confidence boost because it tells me that I am doing something right in the area that I want to pursue a career in.
Remember the lighting that I have used - helpful in the future.
Likes the glasses I have used on some portraits - artsy.
When shooting with a model - get shots for them for the agency and then be creative and do your own thing.
She also suggested a photographer to look at on Instagram:

The other reviewer I saw today was Laura Patrick. I had seen Laura on the previous review day and she had given me great feedback so I wanted to see her again so that she could see the development of my work. I really value Laura's feedback because I work primarily in the studio and she is amazing at lighting and therefore knew she would give really insightful feedback to me.

FMP:

Instantly Laura stated how much the project had developed since the last time she saw it.
Love the cutout images - there is more contrast to the background.
There was something that she loved about the image I created using clingfilm, and she thought it was more interesting than my initial idea of using frosted glass - to relate to other images maybe use coloured gels on the clingfilm to bring in the double use of colour.
Concept of showing/hiding.
Really colourful images work better than the ones using neutral colours - Laura stated that I have a really strong understanding of how to light colour for a background. This meant a lot coming from Laura because I know that light was a major aspect of her Final Major Project.
Laura stated that she wants to see my project go even further than it is at right now.
She likes the idea of placing similar images next to each other.
The way the images are presented in the final exhibition will make it or break it - the images need to be flat and not have any corners popping out because this will ruin it. Have different depths for the images, different sizes, overlay images.
Look at materials to print on - make them solid. Wood?

Fashion:

As soon as I placed the images in front of Laura, she instantly stated that she had seen some of the work on Instagram and loved the ones using a green background.
She said that I look like I am more in control in this shoot than with some of the other images I showed her.
She said the lighting on these images were great.
The portraits work using a 50mm lens.
She suggested using a Mamiya for a shoot to really push myself - better quality images and it slows you down so you get a chance to breathe in between taking each image.

Product:

As Laura is really good with product photography, I thought that I would show her a recent image I had taken after having a talk from her.

She said that it was a good start to say that I had told her product photography is not something I tend to shoot.
Suggested holding something in front of watch to give the watch face an even colour.
She said this was just her being picky, but I like how critical she is because it is really helpful - may need a tiny bit more light above and below the watch.
10 to 2 is the best time to shoot at, it is a time used in watch photography.
Watch photography takes technical knowledge, so this is a good start.
Scoop the background and cut a hole for the camera to look through for an even colour.
